Many people believe that Lucifer is the devil, the cherub who rebelled against God in the Garden of Eden (Ezekiel 28:14). This belief has caused widespread confusion and misinterpretation of Scripture, especially regarding the true identity of the man of sin—the one doomed to destruction. In this post, I will share my insight into who Lucifer truly is and explain where he fits into the prophetic timeline of the end times.
The Name Lucifer
The name Lucifer appears only once in the King James Version of the Bible, specifically in the Book of Isaiah. The name means “shining one,” “light-bringer,” or “morning star,” and it is often associated with pride and the ambition to overthrow God’s authority.
Isaiah 14:12 declares:
“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!
13For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’” (NKJV)
Many interpret this passage as a direct reference to the devil, seeing Lucifer as the embodiment of evil who challenges God’s authority. He is often mistaken for Satan or the so-called Prince of Darkness. However, a closer look at Scripture shows that Lucifer is not Satan. In fact, the Bible calls Lucifer a man.
Isaiah 14:16 states:
“Those who see you will gaze at you,
And consider you, saying:
‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
Who shook kingdoms?’”
This verse offers a crucial insight into Lucifer’s true identity: he is a man. Moreover, the prophet Isaiah indicated that Lucifer is the King of Babylon (Isaiah 14:3). This title also aligns him with other prophetic names, such as the “man doomed to destruction,” the “son of perdition,” the “man of lawlessness,” and the “man of sin.”
The Mount of Congregation and Mount Zion
Isaiah’s prophecy speaks of the “mount of the congregation,” a clear reference to Mount Zion—the dwelling place of God, the gathering of the firstborn, and the spiritual heart of His kingdom on earth. It is the place where heaven and earth meet.
Psalm 48:2 states:
“Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth,
is mount Zion,
on the sides of the north,
the city of the great King.”
Psalm 74:2 adds:
“Remember Your congregation, which You have purchased of old,
The tribe of Your inheritance, which You have redeemed—
This Mount Zion where You have dwelt.”
Lucifer will attempt to ascend Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, and at one point he will succeed in defiling it by exalting himself and proclaiming that he is the messiah. This act of desecration will be the culmination of the “rebellion” against God, setting the stage for the final confrontation between the forces of the Little Horn and the Beast system against the kingdom of God.
A King In The Spiritual Realm
Another crucial aspect of Lucifer’s identity is this: he is a king in the spiritual realm. Understanding this statement requires spiritual discernment, as it goes beyond the physical and into the unseen realities around us. Lucifer will start as a “sleeper” figure—innocent and spiritually sleeping for a time—before being awakened to assume his role as a spiritual king. Furthermore, he will rise to power as the leader of a theocratic religion — the Little Horn, a system that exalts itself above God and His kingdom.
Lucifer and the Little Horn
Indeed, Lucifer will rise as the final leader of the Little Horn religion, carrying out his mission as a ruthless power that relentlessly attacks the saints on Mount Zion—the very kingdom of God. The Little Horn symbolizes a theocracy that has rejected the authority of the true God and aligned itself with the rebellious spirit of Babylon. Within this corrupt and deceptive system, Lucifer, the “son of dawn,” will seize authority and extend his influence across the nations, establishing his dominion on a global scale.
The rise of Lucifer on earth will signal that the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is near. Scripture provides several prophecies that describe his arrival.
Prophecies of His Arrival
Daniel 8:23 says:
“In the latter part of their reign, when the rebellion has reached its full measure, an insolent king, skilled in intrigue, will come to the throne.”
This prophecy points directly to Lucifer as this insolent king — the king of Babylon. His rise will occur during the time of great rebellion, which the Apostle Paul referenced in his letters.
The Rebellion and the Man of Lawlessness
Paul wrote in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4:
“Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.”
Paul’s prophecy is rooted in the visions of the prophet Daniel, who also described this self-exalting king.
The King Who Exalts Himself
Daniel 11:36 proclaims:
“And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.”
By the time this prophecy unfolds, Lucifer will be orchestrating events as the leader of the Little Horn religion. His power will grow, and he will challenge everything holy, fulfilling his role as the king who exalts himself above all gods.
Daniel 8:24 adds:
“His power will be great, but it will not be his own. He will cause terrible destruction and succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men along with the holy people.”
Persecution of God’s People
The “mighty men” and the “holy people” mentioned here refer to the multitude and the 144,000 elect saints: the Two Witnesses. For a time, they will fall under Lucifer’s oppression, but God will ultimately deliver them during the first resurrection.
Jesus warned His followers of this persecution in John 16:2:
“They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.”
Similarly, the Apostle John prophesied in Revelation 11:7:
“And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.”
Lucifer the Craftsman
Daniel 8:25 gives further insight into Lucifer’s methods:
“Through his craft and by his hand, he will cause deceit to prosper, and in his own mind, he will make himself great. In a time of peace, he will destroy many, and he will even stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be broken off, but not by human hands.”
This verse suggests that Lucifer will likely emerge from secret societies that practice the “craft,” using cunning and manipulation to deceive the nations and the believers of God.
The Lawless One and False Wonders
Paul also described the deceptive nature of Lucifer’s coming:
2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 says,
“The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder, and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them.”
Lucifer, as the lawless one, will use technology and false miracles to convince many to follow the Little Horn religion. His system will stand in direct opposition to the truth of God.
The Abomination that Causes Desolation
When Lucifer proclaims himself to be the messiah, this event is the culmination of the “abomination that causes desolation.” Daniel 9:27 explains:
“And he will confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of the temple will come the abomination that causes desolation, until the decreed destruction is poured out upon him.”
Jesus also warned His followers in Mark 13:14:
“So when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.”
This declaration will usher in the great tribulation. Matthew 24:21-22 confirms this:
“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.”
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the First Resurrection
At the appointed time, Jesus Christ will return to rescue His people and destroy Lucifer. Revelation 11:11-12 describes the resurrection of the Two Witnesses, while Paul wrote in 2 Thessalonians 2:8:
“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.”
Isaiah also prophesied Lucifer’s ultimate downfall in Isaiah 14:15-21, portraying his humiliating fall into the depths of Sheol and his utter destruction.
Conclusion
Lucifer, the “son of dawn,” is the man doomed to destruction—the man of lawlessness, the king of Babylon. He will rise to power as the leader of the Little Horn religion, persecute the Two Witnesses, they are the multitude and the 144,000 Israelites of Revelation, and bring terrible destruction to the earth. He will appear as a false light, a counterfeit messiah, deceiving many.
When Lucifer’s reign begins, we can be certain that the second coming of Jesus Christ and the first resurrection are near. May this understanding strengthen your faith and prepare you for the days to come.
