Who Is The Archangel Michael?

Last updated on January 26, 2025

The archangel Michael is a significant and enigmatic figure in the Bible, making it crucial for believers to understand his role and significance. In this post, I will share my insights into who Michael is and what he symbolizes for God’s people.

What are angels?

First, let us look in the Bible for what angels are.

Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits And His ministers a flame of fire.”

Hence, angels are spirits.

Hebrews 1:14 “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Moreover, the role of the angels is to assist God’s people—those whom God seeks to save.

Indeed, angels are spirits that help God’s people.

Michael Role

However, Michael is not just any angel who ministers to God’s people; he holds a unique role in their aid. The archangel Michael plays a significant part in the end times, as described by the Apostle John in the book of Revelation.

Revelation 12:7 “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.

Discerning Michael’s Spirit

Is there a way to comprehend what kind of spirit Michael represents?

Yes, there is a way.

The following verses reveal the spirit of the archangel Michael.

Daniel 10:13 “But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me because I was detained there with the king of Persia.

This verse illustrates a spiritual conflict in which the archangel Michael intervenes to assist the archangel Gabriel, who has been hindered by a formidable opposing force known as the “prince of the Persia”. Michael’s role as a chief prince and a defender in this struggle underscores his significance in the spiritual realm, particularly in the battle against forces that resist God’s purposes.

Daniel 10:21 “but first, I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.)

Michael’s Dominion Is Freedom

In our previous post, we linked the realm of Persia to the spirit of authoritarianism. In this verse, the angel Gabriel is facing another angelic being whose domain represents the spirit of communism, another form of authoritarianism. The archangel Michael came to support Gabriel in his struggle against these oppressive spiritual forces, helping to convey what’s in the Book of Truth to the people in those contested regions.

In communist nations, authorities frequently suppress the Word of God, hindering people from practicing their faith or accessing the Bible. The nation under communism described in this biblical event experienced similar challenges. Michael intervened to bring freedom, allowing those whom God was calling to share the Word of God openly. From this, we can discern that Michael’s spiritual domain is freedom.

To Be Taken Out Of The Way

Additionally, the apostle Paul explains that for lawlessness to fully manifest on earth, someone must first be “taken out of the way.” I believe this figure is Michael, who has dominion over freedom.

2 Thessalonians 2:7 “For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.

Here Apostle Paul speaks of “the mystery of lawlessness” and “the one who now restrains” being “taken out of the way.” Many interpretations exist for this passage, and one common view is that a divine or spiritual being is restraining lawlessness. Associating this figure with Michael the Archangel is intriguing, as Michael is often seen as a protector and warrior in biblical tradition (especially in Daniel 12:1, where he stands guard over God’s people).

Michael’s connection to freedom could be interpreted as his role in defending against forces of evil and chaos. In this sense, if Michael were “taken out of the way,” it could symbolize a withdrawal of divine protection, allowing lawlessness to fully manifest. This perspective aligns with views that see Michael as an agent of restraint who upholds divine order, potentially giving room for the prophetic unfolding of events once his protective role is removed.

The interpretation of this passage continues to be the subject of theological debate, as others see “the one who restrains” as the Holy Spirit, the Church, or even governmental authority. However, viewing it through the lens of Michael’s domain of freedom provides a meaningful connection to his role in spiritual warfare.

Therefore, if my interpretation is accurate, Michael, the guardian of freedom, will ultimately be “taken out of the way” in this prophecy. Once freedom has been taken from people, it will pave the way for the Beast’s governing system to emerge, seizing total control of the world and spreading darkness and lawlessness. The rise of the Beast will consequently lead to the oppression and persecution of the saints, the enforced worship of the “Image of the Beast,” and the feared imposition of the “Mark of the Beast.”

However, when the Beast’s reign ends, Michael will rise once more, signaling the return of freedom, and its renewed flourishing.

Daniel 12:1 “At that time, Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise...”

Michael and The Devil

Another verse in the Bible mentions Michael, but I will address it in a separate post where I will explain the “body of Moses” and why Michael is contending with the Devil over it.

Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
