Jesus Christ proclaimed in Matthew 6:22, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” He delivered this parable not merely as a metaphor for physical vision, but as a profound spiritual truth.
According to the Scriptures, the eye symbolizes the Spirit (Revelation 5:6), the lamp stands for a church or congregation (Revelation 1:20), and the body signifies the members of that church (1 Corinthians 12:27).
Therefore, when we interpret Christ’s words in light of these truths, we recognize that the Spirit illuminates the congregation. If the spirits of the members remain healthy—full of light and truth—then the entire body, the church, shines brightly. The fellowship of righteous spirits brings light to the whole assembly, just as a healthy eye lights the body. When the spiritual vision remains pure, the congregation reflects the light of Christ to the world.
Walking In The Light
The Bible confirms this interpretation through several powerful verses. In John 4:23, Jesus declared, “But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” This means true worship flows from the Spirit, aligning perfectly with the health of the “eye” in the parable.
1 John 1:7 explains, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” Walking in the light produces true fellowship, showing that a congregation united in the Spirit dwells in divine illumination.
The Church of The Firstborn
Hebrews 12:22-23 unveils the heavenly picture: “But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect.” The church is not merely earthly—it is a spiritual body made of perfected spirits.
The Light Of The World
As Jesus affirmed in Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world. You cannot hide a city that has been built upon a mountain.” A congregation built on Mount Zion, where the spirits dwell in light, cannot remain hidden. It becomes a beacon to the nations.
Mount Zion
And finally, Psalm 74:2 reminds us, “Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.” God’s dwelling is among His congregation—on Mount Zion—a place where light, spirit, and fellowship converge.
Conclusion
In summary, when the spirit (the eye) of the church remains healthy, the entire congregation (the body) becomes a shining lamp, illuminating the world as Mount Zion—God’s holy dwelling and the light of all nations.
