The idea that our spirits have a mother may seem difficult to grasp, yet the apostle Paul conveyed this concept to us as believers.
Galatians 4:6 “but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.“
Heavenly Jerusalem, Zion, Or Mount Zion
The Jerusalem above is the spiritual or heavenly Jerusalem; she is our mother. She is also known as Zion or Mount Zion and is the subject of numerous prophecies in the Old and New Testaments.
But, how is the heavenly Jerusalem or Mount Zion the mother of our spirits? You might ask.
Psalm 87:5 And of Zion it will be said, “This one and that one were born in her; And the Most High Himself shall establish her.”
Born Again
Jesus said in the following verse that we must be born again by water and the Spirit.
John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
When someone is “born again” in the Spirit, they recognize Mount Zion, also known as the Heavenly Jerusalem, as the Kingdom of God and their mother.
Additionally, Mount Zion is our spiritual mother because believers learn righteousness through her guidance in the Spirit. This righteousness, taught by the Spirit, becomes an integral part of our spirit. In this way, we experience spiritual rebirth when we understand the truth that is the Spirit.
1 John 5:6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
However, most believers experience being “born again” through water, but this alone is not enough to see the kingdom of God. Baptism by water is “believing in God and the Son Of God which is the foundation of our faith.
1 John 5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
But the Lord Jesus explained that one must also be born of the Spirit. This is why many are unable to perceive the kingdom of God—they have not been born of the Spirit even though they received water baptism.
The Light Of The World
Being aware of the spiritual realities of the world is the first step in getting baptized in the Spirit. Most people encounter these spiritual realities daily but are unable to discern the truth.
Moreover, being “born again” in the Spirit has its basis in “the light” of the Son of God.
John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
Hence, The Lord Jesus conveyed that His followers are “the light of the world”.
Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
The light of the world is the king. The City on the hill or mountain is Mount Zion, the bride of Christ or the church. Together, they are “the light of the world a city on a hill that cannot be hidden”, Mount Zion, the Kingdom of God.

Additionally, Jesus called the believers of God His mother because the spirits of the righteous dwell on Mount Zion, the mother of our spirits.
Mark 3:35 “For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”
