The First Resurrection and the Final Sign: What to Watch For in the Last Days

No one knows the exact day or hour when the first resurrection will take place. Yet, God in His mercy has not left us completely in the dark. Through Scripture, He has provided us with numerous signs and prophetic events to watch for as the day draws near. After prayer and reflection, I believe God has given me some insight into this topic—and in this post, I want to share that with you.

A Parable of Jesus and a Final Clue

As we approach the end of the age, the Bible warns us to stay alert and spiritually vigilant. We are told to watch for a coming “rebellion” and the revealing of the “man of lawlessness.” However, there is one specific event that, when it occurs, will serve as the final prophetic sign pointing directly to the resurrection: the slaying of the Two Witnesses by the Beast.

The Beast, as prophesied in the Book of Revelation, is not just a man but a global system—one that utterly rejects God and will become aggressively hostile toward both Jews and Christians. This anti-God world power will rise in the last days and will severely persecute the people of God. I will explore the identity of the Beast more deeply in a separate post, but for now, let us turn our focus back to the resurrection.

When Jesus was asked by His disciples about the end times and the coming of God’s Kingdom, He gave them a mysterious but profound response in the form of a parable:

Luke 17:37“Where, Lord?” they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”

This statement may sound cryptic at first, but when viewed through the lens of prophecy, it becomes clear. The “dead body” in this parable points to the Two Witnesses, who will serve as the final earthly representation of the Body of Christ. According to Scripture, the Two Witnesses are Judah and Israel, and they will be killed by the Beast that rises out of the Abyss. Their death fulfills the words of Jesus in Luke 17:37. These Two Witnesses are also identified as the Two Lampstands, the Two Anointed Ones, and the Two Olive Trees in prophetic imagery.

So when this moment arrives—when the Beast slays the Two Witnesses in plain view of the whole world—we can be absolutely certain: the resurrection is at hand.

The Two Witnesses Killed and Raised to Life

The Book of Revelation gives us a detailed look into this final sign. The following verses describe exactly what will happen to the Two Witnesses and how their resurrection will unfold:

Revelation 11:7–10
“When the Two Witnesses have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will wage war with them, and will overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city—figuratively called Sodom and Egypt—where their Lord was also crucified. For three and a half days all peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will view their bodies and will not permit them to be laid in a tomb. And those who dwell on the earth will gloat over them, and will celebrate and send each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented them.”

For three and a half days, the world will celebrate their death. The people of the earth will refuse to bury their bodies, and instead, they will mock them, unaware of what is about to happen next. Then, the resurrection will come with power:

Revelation 11:11–12
“But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered the Two Witnesses, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them. And the witnesses heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Come up here.’ And they went up to heaven in a cloud as their enemies watched them.”

This, dear brethren, is the resurrection. The breath of life from God will raise the Two Witnesses from the dead, and they will ascend into heaven in a cloud while the whole world watches in stunned fear. It is a moment of divine victory and fulfillment—a sign that God’s promises are being completed before our very eyes.

The Kingdom of God Established on Earth

Immediately after the resurrection, the final trumpet will sound. Heaven will proclaim that the kingdoms of the earth now belong to God and His Anointed One. This declaration confirms that the resurrection does not merely bring personal salvation to the saints—it also ushers in the Kingdom of God on Earth.

Revelation 11:15
“The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign forever and ever.’”

At this point, the long-awaited shift in spiritual authority will take place. The systems of the world that once ruled without acknowledging God will be overthrown. The dominion of Christ will be established in righteousness, truth, and power. This is the hope that we, as believers, long for: the full establishment of God’s reign among the nations.

Final Thoughts and Encouragement

I’ve written another post that touches more on we might expect in the heavenly realm as participants of the ressurrection—including the freedom, joy, and glory that await us there. If you’re interested in exploring that further, you can click here to read it.

For now, I hope this message has deepened your understanding of what lies ahead. Let us remain watchful and faithful. When we see the slaying and resurrection of the Two Witnesses, we will know the time has come. The resurrection will not delay, and the Kingdom of God will soon be fully manifested here on earth.

May the Lord bless you with wisdom, courage, and spiritual discernment as you continue your walk with Him.
