What are the blasphemous names written on the heads of the beast?
In our previous posts, we explained that the heads of the beast symbolize seven types of government systems. These systems represent the ruling styles of Babylon, Medo-Persia, and Greece. Babylon represents theocracy, where religious authority governs as divine rule. Medo-Persia stands for authoritarian rule, with absolute monarchy and communism as its two dominant expressions. Greece, on the other hand, represents democracy, which later fragmented into four distinct forms. These governing systems exalt themselves above God’s authority, and that is why they carry blasphemous names.
To understand how theocracy, absolute monarchy, communism and democracy can be considered blasphemous to God, one must evaluate each system’s core principles in light of biblical revelation—especially concerning God’s sovereignty, divine order, and the Lordship of Jesus Christ. The Bible does not explicitly name these systems, but spiritual discernment can identify how their philosophical or structural foundations may oppose or counterfeit the rule of God.
1. Theocracy (Man-Made): Counterfeit of God’s Rule
Core Principle: A theocracy is a government that claims to rule on behalf of God, with religious leaders or texts forming the legal structure.
Why It Can Be Blasphemous:
- Impersonation of Divine Rule: When humans claim to enforce God’s law without His Spirit. Revelation 13:11—a false prophet with “two horns like a lamb” (appearing godly), but “speaks like a dragon” (serving the pride of Satan).
- Blends Holy with Profane: Human theocracies often mix God’s name with political violence, coercion, and injustice, making God appear evil to the world.
- False Christs and False Prophets: Many theocratic systems reject Jesus Christ as the only Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5). They blaspheme by exalting priests, imams, popes, or prophets above the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. Absolute Monarchy: A Human King as Supreme Authority
Core Principle: In an absolute monarchy, the king or queen holds total power, unchecked by laws, constitutions, or the people.
Why It Can Be Blasphemous:
- Usurps Christ’s Kingship: God declared that Jesus is the only King of kings (Revelation 19:16). An absolute monarch who claims divine right or godlike authority intrudes upon Christ’s eternal throne.
- Self-Deification: Many monarchs have claimed to rule “by divine right,” equating their will with God’s will, making themselves idols.
- Oppression of God’s People: The prophets constantly warned against kings who abused power (e.g., Ahab, Manasseh). Rulers who trample justice and enslave God’s people stand in direct rebellion against Him.
3. Communism: Rejection of Divine Ownership and Authority
Core Principle: Communism is built on the idea of classless, stateless society, often founded upon atheistic materialism (especially in Marxist-Leninist forms), denying private ownership and asserting that the state or collective owns all property.
Why It Can Be Blasphemous:
- Denies God as Creator and Owner: Scripture teaches that “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). Communism removes God from the equation of ownership and human purpose.
- Exalts Man Above God: In communist ideology, man is the highest authority, and the state becomes god-like, providing, judging, and controlling.
- Persecution of Faith: Historically, communist regimes have oppressed Christianity, burned Bibles, banned churches, and murdered saints—blaspheming God through the silencing of His witness.
4. Democracy: Rule by the People, Not by God
Core Principle: Democracy empowers the majority to govern through elected representatives. The will of the people becomes the supreme moral compass in lawmaking.
Why It Can Be Blasphemous:
- Crowd Over Christ: The same spirit that shouted “Crucify Him!” (Matthew 27:22) still moves through mob rule. Popular opinion often rejects God’s commandments and approves sin (e.g., legalizing abortion, redefining marriage).
- Idolatry of Human Opinion: When the people become the source of law, they replace God’s Word with their own, effectively making human reason the highest authority—which is a form of idolatry and rebellion.
- False Equality of Truths: Democracy tolerates all views equally, including those hostile to God, and creates a society where truth becomes relative, not absolute.
Conclusion: God’s Government Is Christ Alone
All four systems— human theocracy, communism, monarchy and democracy —can become blasphemous when they:
- Replace God’s authority with man’s;
- Corrupt justice and righteousness;
- Persecute God’s people;
- Twist God’s image or Word for their own gain.
The Kingdom of God is not built by the will of men, but by the Spirit of God through Jesus Christ. Any system that denies His Lordship, or manipulates His name for power, blasphemes His holiness.
“In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.”
