Jerusalem: The Mother Of Righteous And Faithful Spirits

Last updated on August 2, 2025

The concept that our spirits have a mother might seem strange or even difficult to grasp. In a physical sense, everyone understands the idea of being born from a mother. But when we speak about the spiritual realm, this truth often feels abstract. Yet, the apostle Paul boldly revealed this spiritual reality to the early church. He wrote:

Galatians 4:26 – “But the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.”

This profound statement calls us to look beyond our natural understanding of family and identity. Paul teaches that as children of God, our true spiritual birth and nurturing come from a higher source—“the Jerusalem above.” This heavenly city is none other than Mount Zion, the dwelling place of God and the bride of Christ.

But what does it truly mean that Mount Zion is “the mother of us all”? Why is this understanding crucial for believers today? Let’s explore the biblical foundation of this truth, its prophetic depth, and its meaning for our spiritual journey.

Heavenly Jerusalem: The Mother of Our Spirits

The “Jerusalem above” refers to a spiritual, heavenly reality. Unlike the physical city of Jerusalem on earth, the Jerusalem above is eternal, holy, and free from the corruption of this world. This heavenly Jerusalem is also called Zion or Mount Zion, and it is described throughout the Bible as the place where God establishes His kingdom and gathers His children.

You may ask, How is the heavenly Jerusalem, or Mount Zion, our mother? The psalmist answers this question with prophetic clarity:

Psalm 87:5 – “And of Zion it will be said, ‘This one and that one were born in her; And the Most High Himself shall establish her.’”

This passage reveals that spiritual birth occurs in Zion. It is there that the Most High establishes us as His children. Zion is not merely a place but a living, spiritual reality—an expression of God’s Kingdom, His presence, and His people.

Spiritual Birth and the Kingdom of God

Jesus spoke about the necessity of being “born again” when He explained the process of entering the Kingdom of God:

John 3:5-6 – “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

This statement distinguishes two forms of birth: a physical birth through the flesh and a spiritual birth through the Spirit. While our earthly mothers give us physical life, our spiritual mother—Mount Zion—nurtures and establishes us through the Spirit of God.

When a believer is “born again” through the Spirit, they come to recognize the heavenly Jerusalem as their true home. It is in this spiritual dimension that we receive the light of God’s truth, grow in righteousness, and understand the Kingdom of God.

The Role of Water Baptism and Faith

Many believers experience water baptism as the first step of faith. This baptism represents repentance, forgiveness of sins, and the foundation of belief in Jesus Christ. As the apostle John wrote:

1 John 5:1 – “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.”

However, water baptism alone does not open our spiritual eyes to see the Kingdom of God. Jesus emphasized that we must also be born of the Spirit. Without this spiritual rebirth, many believers remain unable to perceive the deeper realities of the Kingdom, even though they have publicly declared their faith.

Born of the Spirit: A Deeper Transformation

To be born of the Spirit means to receive life from above—life that transforms the mind, heart, and soul. This rebirth is not merely about following religious traditions but about entering into a living relationship with God through the Spirit.

The Spirit teaches us righteousness, convicts us of sin, and fills us with the truth of Christ. As John wrote:

1 John 5:6 – “This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.”

Through the Spirit, we become children of Zion, learning the ways of God’s Kingdom. This spiritual mother nurtures us with divine wisdom, shaping us into the image of Christ.

The Light of the World: Walking in Spiritual Awareness

Being born of the Spirit begins with recognizing the spiritual realities of this world. Jesus identified Himself as the source of this spiritual light:

John 8:12 – “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Walking in the light means seeing the truth, discerning the unseen battles around us, and understanding our identity as children of God. Moreover, Jesus extended this identity to His followers:

Matthew 5:14 – “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

This “city on a hill” refers to Mount Zion, the spiritual city of God, which cannot be hidden. As believers, we are called to reflect this light and embody the Kingdom of God in our lives.

Mount Zion: The Bride and Mother of the Faithful

Mount Zion is more than a place of spiritual birth—it is the bride of Christ, the Church, and the dwelling of the saints. The apostle John’s vision of the New Jerusalem in the book of Revelation aligns with this truth. He saw the holy city coming down as a bride adorned for her husband (Revelation 21:2).

Jesus Himself reinforced this spiritual relationship when He declared:

Mark 3:35 – “For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”

Through this statement, Jesus revealed that spiritual kinship transcends physical family. Those who live according to God’s will are part of the divine household, rooted in Mount Zion—the mother of all who are born of the Spirit.

Living as Children of Zion

As children of Mount Zion, we are called to live in alignment with the values of the Kingdom of God. This means pursuing righteousness, walking in truth, and reflecting the light of Christ in a dark world. We do not belong to earthly systems of power or corruption; instead, we are citizens of a heavenly city that cannot be shaken.

Hebrews 12:22 reminds us:
“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels…”

This passage calls us to recognize our spiritual heritage. We are not wandering aimlessly in this world; we have a mother who establishes us, a kingdom that welcomes us, and a King who reigns over us with love and power.
