Introduction: Understanding the Name Above Every Name
Many believers rejoice in the truth that our Lord Jesus Christ has been given “the name above all names.” However, one important question remains: What exactly is this name? While some people assume that the name is simply “Jesus,” a closer study of Scripture suggests something even more profound. Let us explore what the Bible truly reveals about this most exalted name.
Jesus Was Exalted to the Highest Place
We begin with a powerful declaration found in Philippians 2:9-11:
“Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
This passage makes it clear that God exalted Jesus Christ and bestowed upon Him a name above every other. As a result, all creation—whether in heaven, on earth, or beneath the earth—must bow at the mention of His name. Yet we must ask ourselves, what is the true essence of this name that causes every knee to bend?
The Son of God: The Name Jesus Inherited
To find the answer, let us turn to Hebrews 1:1-5, where the identity and inheritance of the Son are revealed:
“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom also He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So He became as much superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is superior to theirs.”
“For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father’? Or again, ‘I will be His Father, and He will be my Son’?”
These verses shed light on the true nature of the name Jesus inherited. The name is not just “Jesus” as given at His birth, but rather “Son”—specifically, The Son of God. This title is both His identity and His exaltation.
Why “The Son of God” Is the Name Above All Names
When we declare that Jesus has been given the name above all names, we must recognize the full authority behind the title The Son of God. This is the name that surpasses all others, not merely in vocal sound but in spiritual significance. It reflects the unique relationship Jesus has with the Father and the divine authority He now holds.
Moreover, as Acts 2:36 affirms:
“Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ!”
God Himself made Jesus both Lord and Christ, and in doing so, He sealed His Sonship with authority over heaven and earth. Thus, the title “Son of God” stands as the name that encompasses both rulership and divine identity.
Conclusion: Bowing Before the True Name
In summary, the name above all names is not simply the earthly name “Jesus” but rather the divine and eternal title The Son of God. This is the name Jesus inherited, and it is the name that now calls every knee to bow and every tongue to confess His Lordship.
