A Personal Testimony: How To Overcome Demonic Oppression

Last updated on September 21, 2025

When Darkness Presses In: My Story of Battling Demons

Have you ever felt terror that makes no sense, voices that won’t leave you alone, or an inner pressure that steals your sleep? I faced those things—and through that battle I learned how real the spiritual realm is, how fierce the attacks can become, and how the Son of God meets us in the fight.

My Testimony: when I first saw the battle

For more than a decade I lived with increasing spiritual attacks. At first I only felt uneasy, but over time the pressure intensified until I could no longer ignore it. I discovered that these hostile spirits had watched and lurked around me long before I recognized them; they revealed themselves only when they began to press harder. When their attacks escalated, I ran to God with greater urgency, seeking his help and protection. In that desperate seeking I learned to rely on the Lord instead of my own strength.

Demonic attacks: how they work and how they feel

Soon I experienced panic attacks so intense they threatened my sanity. Demons tried to intimidate, frighten, and oppress me; they manipulated my emotions and fed my mind with constant negativity. They harassed me at night and robbed me of sleep. In extreme oppression they pushed me to the brink of despair. Moreover, they worked to lure me into sin and pull me away from God’s grace. Yet even as they struck, the Son of God began to reveal himself to me, showing me that their power has limits.

Importantly, the demons recognized who the Lord Jesus is. The Gospels record this reality:
Luke 4:41 — “Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.”
Because the Son stands above them, demons tremble when His name and presence come near.

The Son of God: our refuge and victory

Throughout my struggle the Lord revealed himself to me in ways I could not imagine. I learned that when the Son of God dwells openly in a person, the demons cannot overcome that person. They seek to silence the Spirit in us because when the Spirit lives and moves in someone, their schemes lose power. In my experience, God used that spiritual reality to call me into the kingdom of His Son and to give me strength to stand.

The Lord Jesus promised that he will manifest himself to those who love and obey him:
John 14:21 — “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
Therefore, if you seek God and hold fast to his ways, the Son will reveal himself to you—and that revelation changes everything.

Likewise, God promises restoration after suffering:
1 Peter 5:10 — “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

The Bible: learning spiritual realities by Spirit-taught words

You cannot overcome these battles simply by guessing; you must learn God’s truth. The Bible explains spiritual realities in Spirit-taught language:
1 Corinthians 2:13 — “This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.”
So begin with prayer and Scripture. Read. Believe. Let God’s Word shape how you see the unseen warfare.

In practice, strengthen your spiritual life by praying, fasting, avoiding sin, and—if the Lord leads you—observing the Sabbath. These disciplines help build the spiritual muscle you need to resist.

Demons exist—and there is hope

If you doubt the reality of demons, I urge you not to wait until the damage is done. Many people only understand the spiritual realm after it harms them. Yet even if darkness has captured you, hope remains. The Lord Jesus came to rescue the captive and free the oppressed. As Scripture declares the mission of the Spirit:
Luke 4:18 — “The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,”
and Isaiah echoes the call:
Isaiah 14:9 — “to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’ ‘They will feed beside the roads and find pasture on every barren hill.’”

Forgiveness: a shield in the spiritual realm

One practical weapon that protects you is forgiveness. When you hold bitterness, you hand demons a foothold. Forgiveness functions as a form of spiritual self-defense: as you forgive those who hurt you, you cut the cord that demons use to entangle your heart. The Lorde Jesus taught the connection between forgiving others and receiving forgiveness yourself:
Luke 6:37 — “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”
Because demons will test your willingness to forgive, expect resistance—and press on anyway.

Where faith meets medical help

If you experience panic attacks, depression, obsessive thoughts, hearing voices, or other mental and behavioral problems, take them seriously. From my perspective, these can be signs of demonic attack, and you will need God’s help to be truly freed. At the same time, the medical community can offer short-term relief—medications, therapy, and practical care—and I recommend you accept those tools where helpful. Do not put medical help and spiritual help in opposition; use both faithfully. Seek God, and also consult trustworthy healthcare professionals as needed.

Practical steps to take now

First, seek God in prayer and Scripture—ask God to reveal His Son to you. Second, practice spiritual disciplines that build protection: regular prayer, fasting when able, abstaining from sin, and obedience to God’s commands. Third, forgive those who have hurt you and refuse to judge or condemn others. Fourth, if you need medical or psychological help, get professional care while you pursue spiritual freedom.

Conclusion & call to action

I want to encourage you: do not give up. Persevere in faith and pursue God with all your heart. As you do, he will reveal himself in the face of His Son— Jesus Christ to you. He will strengthen you, and begin to restore what the darkness tried to steal. Start today—pray, read God’s Word, confess your need, and take one obedient step toward him.
