Life In The Spirit

Last updated on July 30, 2025

When the Bible speaks of “life,” it speaks of something far deeper than mere human existence. The question is: what kind of life is the Scripture truly referring to? Is it the biological breath we all carry—or is it something far greater, unseen by the physical eye but known to the soul? Scripture reveals that this “life” is not earthly but spiritual, not temporary but eternal. It is the life of God, revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Manifestation of Life: Christ Revealed

The apostle John did not describe “life” as something abstract. Rather, he declared that life appeared to them—visibly, tangibly, undeniably. In 1 John 1:2, he wrote, “The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.” Clearly, John wasn’t speaking of human life. He was describing Jesus Christ, the eternal life made visible in human form.

Jesus declared of Himself in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” This life that Christ brings is not just enlightenment—it is the very Spirit of God. Acts 3:15 calls Him the “author of life,” and 1 John 5:12 draws a line in the sand: “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” Life in the Spirit means having the Son of God living within you.

What Is Spiritual Life?

Spiritual life is not a concept; it is a reality—one birthed by God in the heart of every believer. Galatians 4:6 explains, “Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’” Jesus is both the light and the life in every person who believes. John 1:4 says, “In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.” This life is not visible in flesh, but it radiates in the Spirit. It is the spark of eternity ignited in our hearts by the living God.

Recognizing the Reality of the Spirit

If you don’t realize you have a spiritual life, you may be “asleep”—or worse, blind to reality. You are in danger of being drawn into darkness, taken captive by Satan, and spiritually perishing. Jesus often referred to spiritually dead people even though they were physically alive. In Luke 9:60, He said, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” This spiritual death is far more dangerous than physical death because it disconnects a person from God—the source of all true life.

So why does God want to save us? He wants to rescue us not merely from physical death, but more importantly, from spiritual death. As Job 33:28 reveals, “He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.” Even if we are spiritually dead, God can restore us through Christ. Jesus promised in John 11:25–26, “Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.”

How Do We Live in the Spirit?

Living in the Spirit is not a one-time experience—it’s a way of life. It begins by believing in the Son of God and following Him daily. The Holy Spirit taught me that in order to truly live, we must place unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. We must cling to Him with our hearts and actions. John 3:36 warns us clearly: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life.” This is a sobering truth: to live without Christ is to remain under God’s wrath.

Hebrews 10:38 echoes this message: “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” Living in the Spirit requires courage, consistency, and commitment to God’s Word and His will.

From Death to Life

How can we know if we’ve transitioned from death to life? Scripture provides the answer.

John 5:24 promises, “Whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life… and has crossed over from death to life.” Likewise, 1 John 3:14 declares, “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other.” When we walk in love, in faith, and in obedience, we walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 commands us plainly, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

Fixing Our Eyes on the Unseen

To live in the Spirit, we must shift our focus away from the visible and onto the eternal. The things of this world are temporary, but the unseen realm holds lasting significance. As 2 Corinthians 4:18 states, “We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.” Our minds must align with spiritual truths, not carnal desires. Romans 8:5–6 explains the contrast: “Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh… but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

Standing Firm Against Evil Forces

The moment we become spiritually aware, the enemy tries to confuse and mislead us. The devil uses spiritual forces to wage war against our minds. These spirits operate in deception, aiming to steal, kill, and destroy. As John 10:10 warns, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

We are not merely fighting against flesh and blood. As Ephesians 6:12 reveals, we are engaged in a battle “against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” However, God did not leave us defenseless. He gave us His Word—the sword of the Spirit—to expose lies and illuminate truth. Paul described it best in 1 Corinthians 2:13: “We speak… words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.”

The Word of God: Our Ultimate Weapon

To live in the Spirit, we must stay rooted in the Word of God. The Bible equips us with truth, reveals the invisible world, and strengthens our resolve. Without it, we risk being overwhelmed by lies. With it, we walk in hope and victory. Jesus assured us in John 8:51, “If anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”

Conclusion: Christ Is Our Life

The essence of spiritual life is Jesus Christ. He is the source, the sustainer, and the salvation of our souls. To live in the Spirit means to remain connected to Him—the source of our spiritual life—by faith, by obedience, and by love. Though this blog is just a glimpse into a vast subject, I pray it stirs something in your heart.

There is much more to share, and I will write more in future posts. Until then, may you pursue life in the Spirit and hold fast to the Son of God. For in Him alone, there is true and everlasting life.

God bless you, my friends and brethren.
