Daniel 8: The Ram’s Higher Horn

Last updated on January 31, 2025

The prophet Daniel’s vision of “a goat and a ram” is a prophecy concerning the second and third kingdoms destined to rule the world—namely, the kingdoms of Greece and Medo-Persia. Moreover, according to a spirit-based interpretation, these two kingdoms represent the spirit of democracy and authoritarianism respectively.

The Vision of A Ram

Daniel 8:2 “I saw in the vision, and it so happened while I was looking, that I was in Shushan, the citadel, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in the vision that I was by the River Ulai. 3Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and there, standing beside the river, was a ram which had two horns, and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last.

In this vision, the ram represents authoritarianism and is depicted with two horns, symbolizing the kingdoms of Media and Persia. These horns stand for absolute monarchy and communism, with communism portrayed as the “higher” horn that “came up last”.

Communism

In this post, we’ll explore the “higher” horn of the ram that “came up last” representing communism, and examine its relevance in this prophetic vision”.

“…a ram which had two horns, and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last.

Communism emerged on the global stage in 1917 following the Russian Revolution. This historical event explains why this “horn” of the ram “grew up” later. The imagery highlights how communism, compared to absolute monarchy, gained prominence in global affairs much later in history.

Daniel 8:5 As I was contemplating all this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between his eyes came out of the west, crossing the surface of the entire earth without touching the ground. 6He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed at him with furious power. 7 I saw him approach the ram in a rage against him, and he struck the ram and shattered his two horns.

Since communism first emerged on the global stage in Russia in 1917, asserting power through authoritarianism, it has stood in direct opposition to democracy. This is reflected in the vision of the prophet Daniel, where the goat (representing democracy) was hostile to the ram (symbolizing authoritarianism) and successfully sought to break its two horns representing absolute monarchy and communism.

Why Persia?

Why is Persia considered the spirit of communism in this spirit-based interpretation?

From a spiritual perspective, it’s possible that God modeled communism after the governing style of ancient Persia. The government of ancient Persia, known as the Achaemenid Empire, was a centralized bureaucracy that combined a hierarchical structure with decentralized administration.

Similarly, communism is often characterized by a centralized bureaucracy with a hierarchical structure, though its relationship to decentralized administration can vary depending on the context.

Relation To The End Times

Additionally, communism can be connected to the onset of the end times, when the prophecies in the vision are meant to be unsealed and understood.

Daniel 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified and fell facedown. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”

Moreover, I would argue that “the time of the end” started in World War 1, specifically in 1917.

Why?

In 1917, the “longer horn” of “the ram” in this vision appeared in history. The Russian Revolution took place in 1917 which resulted in the creation of the first-ever communist state.

But how about the numerous Bible scholars who declare that the establishment of the nation of Israel marks the beginning of the end times?

I agree with them! The creation of the State of Israel played a significant role in initiating the start of the end times.

But did you know that the Balfour Declaration is the force behind the creation of national Israel?

Furthermore, the Balfour Declaration was issued in 1917, just months apart from the Russian Revolution. Now, how much of a coincidence is that? And let’s not forget, it all happened during World War I.

This is why I am convinced that “the time of the end” started in 1917 and it happened during World War 1.

Therefore, I do not doubt that the “longer horn” of the ram, which “grew later,” represents communism, as it directly ties the vision to the end times.

Conclusion

In the prophet Daniel’s vision of the goat and the ram, the ram’s “longer horn” that “grew up later” symbolizes Communism—the spirit of Persia. From a spiritual perspective, there are striking parallels between Communism and the ancient Persian style of governance. Additionally, Communism is directly tied to the onset of the “time of the end” in 1917, during World War I, when the Balfour Declaration was written. This declaration laid the groundwork for the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, which most Bible scholars recognize as a key sign of the end times.
